Objective: The purpose of this study was to compare the biliary enhancement dynamics of the gadolinium-ethoxybenzyl-diethylenetriamine-pentaacetic-acid (Gd-EOB-DTPA) and mangafodipir trisodium (Mn-DPDP) for contrast-enhanced magnetic resonance cholangiography (MRC) in healthy subjects.Methods: 15 healthy volunteers underwent magnetic resonance imaging at 1.5 T with volumetric interpolated breath-hold examination (VIBE) sequence. Each volunteer was scanned once for each contrast agent. The signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) of the liver parenchyma and common hepatic duct (CHD), and the contrast-to-noise ratio (CNR) of CHD to liver parenchyma, were evaluated and compared before and at several time points (5, 15, 30, 45, 60, 90, and 120 min) after injection of each agents.Results: SNR was significantly higher for Gd-EOB-DTPA than for Mn-DPDP in liver parenchyma after 5 min and in CHD after 15 min (p<0.05). CNR of CHD to liver parenchyma using Gd-EOB-DTPA showed an initial decrease at 5 min post-injection followed by a steep increase to a peak at 15 min post-injection. CNR using Mn-DPDP showed a steady increase to a peak at 15 min post-injection without initial decrease. At 15 min, the value of CNR was significantly higher for Gd-EOB-DTPA than for Mn-DPDP (p<0.05).Conclusion: For both contrast agents, CNR reached a peak at 15 min after contrast injection. At this time point, CNR of Gd-EOB-DTPA was significantly higher than that of Mn-DPDP. Therefore, Gd-EOB-DTPA may provide better contrast-enhanced MRC than Mn-DPDP at 15 min after contrast administration.

Metal catalyst-free growth of large scale single layer graphene film on a sapphire substrate by a chemical vapor deposition (CVD) process at 950 °C is demonstrated. A top-gated graphene field effect transistor (FET) device is successfully fabricated without any transfer process. The detailed growth process is investigated by the atomic force microscopy (AFM) studies.

The aim of the present study is to determine the effects and molecular mechanisms by which activation of LKB1-AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK) by metformin regulates vascular smooth muscle contraction. The essential ability of vascular smooth muscle cells (VSMCs) to contract and relax in response to an elevation and reduction in intravascular pressure is necessary for appropriate blood flow regulation. Thus, vessel contraction is a critical mechanism for systemic blood flow regulation. In cultured rat VSMCs, AMPK activation through LKB1 by metformin-inhibited phenylephrine-mediated myosin light chain kinase (MLCK) and myosin light chain phosphorylation (p-MLC). Conversely, inhibition of AMPK and LKB1 reversed phenylephrine-induced MLCK and p-MLC phosphorylation. Measurement of the tension trace in rat aortic rings also showed that the effect of AMPK activation by metformin decreased phenylephrine-induced contraction. Metformin inhibited PE-induced p-MLC and α-smooth muscle actin co-localization. Our results suggest that activation of AMPK by LKB1 decreases VSMC contraction by inhibiting MLCK and p-MLC, indicating that induction by the AMPK-LKB1 pathway may be a new therapeutic target to lower high blood pressure.

PURPOSE: We assessed the effects of central adiposity represented by visceral adipose tissue on prostate volume, prostate specific antigen, and prostate specific antigen mass and mass ratio. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This cross-sectional study included 6,389 Asian men 30 to 79 years old. Prostate volume was estimated by transrectal ultrasound. Visceral and subcutaneous adipose tissue was measured by computerized tomography. Multivariate linear regression analysis was done between prostate specific antigen related variables and obesity indexes such as body mass index, waist circumference, and visceral and subcutaneous adipose tissue after adjusting for age. RESULTS: Body mass index, waist circumference and subcutaneous adipose tissue were inversely associated with prostate specific antigen (p for trend <0.001) but visceral adipose tissue showed no associations with prostate specific antigen (p for trend = 0.740). Waist circumference, and visceral and subcutaneous adipose tissue were positively associated with prostate specific antigen mass (p for trend = 0.014,<0.001 and 0.036, respectively). However, body mass index did not show this association (p for trend = 0.372). Body mass index, waist circumference and subcutaneous adipose tissue negatively affected the prostate specific antigen mass ratio (each p for trend <0.05) but there was no such significant correlation for visceral adipose tissue (p for trend = 0.187). When adjusted for visceral adipose tissue body mass index was not associated with prostate volume (p for trend = 0.152) but visceral adipose tissue remained positively associated with prostate volume even after adjusting for body mass index (p for trend = 0.005). CONCLUSIONS: Visceral adiposity is the main determining factor of the prostate volume increase and prostate specific antigen production.

PURPOSE: Controversial and contradictory data on the association between alcohol consumption and lower urinary tract symptoms are currently available in the literature. In this study we determined the association between alcohol consumption and lower urinary tract symptoms, including voiding and storage symptoms, in a large general screening population. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This cross-sectional study included 30,196 men 30 years old or older participating in a comprehensive health evaluation at the Seoul National University Hospital Healthcare System Gangnam Center. Men with a history of prostate related medical problems such as prostate cancer, prostate surgery or prostatitis were excluded from study. Using the International Prostate Symptom Score, lower urinary tract symptoms were defined as a score of 8 or greater, indicating moderate to severe symptoms. We used logistic regression analysis to determine the association between alcohol consumption and lower urinary tract symptoms. RESULTS: After adjustment for eligible covariates, graphing of the association between alcohol consumption and the risk of moderate to severe lower urinary tract symptoms showed a J-shaped curve. Compared with nondrinkers, the odds ratios of moderate to severe lower urinary tract symptoms were 0.91 (95% CI 0.84-0.98) in men who drank 0 to 10 gm daily and 1.19 (95% CI 1.07-1.33) in those who drank 40 or more gm daily. This is a cross-sectional study with data from self-reported alcohol consumption and, therefore, the reported amounts of alcohol consumption might be underestimated. CONCLUSIONS: To the best of our knowledge this is the largest population based study to evaluate the relationship between alcohol consumption and moderate to severe lower urinary tract symptoms, including voiding and storage symptoms. In men alcohol consumption shows a J-shaped curve relationship with the risk of moderate to severe lower urinary tract symptoms.

Status epilepticus increases brain-blood barrier (BBB) permeability leading to vasogenic edema. This BBB disruption is usually confined within relatively limited cerebral regions including the piriform cortex (PC), and leads to epileptogenesis and contributes to progression of epilepsy. Although cytokines are at least partly responsible for changes in BBB permeability, the role of interleukin-18 (IL-18) in vasogenic edema is not yet explored in detail. In the present study, we investigated the role of IL-18 in SE-induced vasogenic edema formation. Following SE, IL-18/interferon-γ (IFN-γ) system was up-regulated in astrocytes and microglia/macrophages. Recombinant rat (rr) IL-18 infusion decreased vasogenic edema formation, while anti-rat IL-18 infusion increased it. In contrast, rrIFN-γ, and anti-rat IFN-γ infusion showed reverse effects on vasogenic edema formation. rrIL-18 or anti-rat IFN-γ IgG infusion elevated dystrophin expression accompanied by the reduction in vasogenic edema. However, rr-IFN-γ or anti-rat IL-18 IgG infusion significantly decreased dystrophin immunoreactivity within the PC following SE. These findings indicate that IL-18-mediated up-regulation of dystrophin expression may play either a direct or indirect role in maintenance of BBB function following SE. Therefore, our findings suggest that IL-18 may have protective effect on SE-induced BBB disruption in IFN-γ independent mechanism.

We address theoretically the evolution of the heavy fermion Fermi surface (FS) as a function of temperature (T), using a first principles dynamical mean-field theory approach combined with density functional theory. We focus on the archetypical heavy electrons in CeIrIn{5}. Upon cooling, both the quantum oscillation frequencies and cyclotron masses show logarithmic scaling behavior [∼ln(T{0}/T)] with different characteristic temperatures T{0}=130 and 50 K, respectively. The enlargement of the electron FSs at low T is accompanied by topological changes around T=10-50  K. The resistivity coherence peak observed at T≃50  K is the result of the competition between the binding of incoherent 4f electrons to the spd conduction electrons at Fermi level (E{F}) and the formation of coherent 4f electrons.

A geothermal heat pump (GHP) is a potential heat source for the economic heating of broiler houses with optimum production performance. An investigation was conducted to evaluate the effect of a heating system using a GHP on production performance and housing environment of broiler chickens. A comparative analysis was also performed between the GHP system and a conventional heating system that used diesel for fuel. In total, 34,000 one-day-old straight run broiler chicks were assigned to 2 broiler houses with 5 replicates in each (3,400 birds/replicate pen) for 35 d. Oxygen(,) CO(2), and NH(3) concentrations in the broiler house, energy consumption and cost of heating, and production performance of broilers were evaluated. Results showed that the final BW gain significantly (P < 0.05) increased when chicks were reared in the GHP broiler house compared with that of chicks reared in the conventional broiler house (1.73 vs. 1.62 kg/bird). The heating system did not affect the mortality of chicks during the first 4 wk of the experimental period, but the mortality markedly increased in the conventional broiler house during the last wk of the experiment. Oxygen content in the broiler house during the experimental period was not affected by the heating system, but the CO(2) and NH(3) contents significantly increased (P < 0.05) in the conventional broiler house compared with those in the GHP house. Fuel consumption was significantly reduced (P < 0.05) and electricity consumption significantly increased (P < 0.05) in the GHP house compared with the consumption in the conventional house during the experiment. The total energy cost of heating the GHP house was significantly lower (P < 0.05) compared with that of the conventional house. It is concluded that a GHP system could increase the production performance of broiler chicks due to increased inside air quality of the broiler house. The GHP system had lower CO(2) and NH(3) emissions with lower energy cost than the conventional heating system for broiler chickens.

We investigated whether silk fibroin peptide derived from the silkworm, Bombyx mori, could inhibit inflammation and enhance the anti-inflammatory activity of Tat-superoxide dismutase (Tat-SOD ), which was previously reported to effectively penetrate various cells and tissues and exert anti-oxidative activity in a mouse model of inflammation. Inflammation was induced by topical treatment of mouse ears with 12-O-tetradecanoylphorbol- 13-acetate (TPA ). Histological, Western blot, and reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction data demonstrated that silk fibroin peptide or Tat-SOD alone could suppress elevated levels of cyclooxygenase-2, interleukin-6, interleukin-1beta, and tumor necrosis factor-alpha induced by TPA. Moreover, silk fibroin peptide significantly enhanced the anti-inflammatory activity of Tat-SOD, although it had no influence on in vitro and in vivo transduction of Tat-SOD. Silk fibroin peptide exhibited anti- inflammatory activity in a mice model of inflammation. Therefore, silk fibroin peptide alone or in combination with Tat-SOD might be used as a therapeutic agent for various inflammatory diseases. [BMB reports 2011; 44(12): 787-792].

A ventricular septal rupture (VSR) is a rare complication and is variable in its presentation, temporal course and severity. Here, we report a rare case of 75-year-old man who developed delayed VSR following blunt chest trauma.
