OBJECTIVES In the absence of reliable data on the prevalence and burden of primary headache disorders in the mainland of China, a population-based survey was initiated by Lifting The Burden: the Global Campaign against Headache. METHODS Throughout all regions of China, 5041 non-related adult respondents aged 18-65 years were randomly sampled from the general population according to the expanded programme on immunization method established by World Health Organization. They were visited by door-to-door calling and surveyed using the structured questionnaire developed by Lifting The Burden, translated into Chinese and adapted to Chinese culture after a pilot study. RESULTS The responder rate was 94.1%.The estimated 1-year prevalence of primary headache disorders was 23.8%(95%confidence interval 22.6-25.0%), of migraine 9.3%(95% confidence interval 8.5-10.1%), of tension-type headache (TTH) 10.8%(9.9-11.6%), and of chronic daily headache (CDH) 1.0%(0.7-1.2%). Of respondents with migraine, TTH, and CDH, moderate or severe impact and therefore high need for effective medical care were reported by 38.0%, 23.1%, and 47.9%, respectively.The World Health Organization quality of life-8 questionnaire showed that all 3 types of headache reduced life quality. The total estimated annual cost of primary headache disorders, including migraine,TTH, and CDH was CNY 672.7 billion, accounting for 2.24% of gross domestic product (GDP)(direct cost: CNY 108.8 billion, 0.36% of GDP; indirect cost: CNY 563.9 billion, 1.88%of GDP). CONCLUSION The prevalence of primary headaches is high in China and not dissimilar from the world average. These headaches cause disability, impair work, study and daily activities, decrease life quality, and bring about a heavy and hitherto unrecognized socioeconomic burden.

The study was conducted to determine the effects of iron glycine chelate (Fe-Gly) on growth, tissue mineral concentrations, fecal mineral excretion, and liver antioxidant enzyme activities in broilers. A total of 360 1-day-old commercial broilers (Ross × Ross) were randomly allotted to six dietary treatments with six replications of ten chicks per replicate. Broilers were fed a control diet with no Fe supplementation, while five other treatments consisted of 40, 80, 120, and 160 mg Fe/kg diets from Fe-Gly, and 160 mg Fe/kg from ferrous sulfate, respectively. After a 42-day feeding trial, the results showed that 120 and 160 mg Fe/kg as Fe-Gly improved the average daily gain (P < 0.05) and average daily feed intake (P < 0.05) of broilers (4-6 weeks). Addition with 120 and 160 mg Fe/kg from Fe-Gly and 160 mg Fe/kg from FeSO(4) increased Fe concentration in serum (P < 0.05), liver (P < 0.05), breast muscle (P < 0.05), tibia (P < 0.05), and feces (P < 0.01) at 21 and 42 days. There were linear responses to the addition of Fe-Gly from 0 to 160 mg/kg Fe on Fe concentration in serum (21 days, P = 0.005; 42 days, P = 0.001), liver (P = 0.001), breast muscle (P = 0.001), tibia (P = 0.001), and feces (21 days, P = 0.011; 42 days, P = 0.032). Liver Cu/Zn superoxide dismutase activities of chicks were increased by the addition of 80, 120, and 160 mg Fe/kg as Fe-Gly to diets at 42 days. There were no differences in liver catalase activities of chicks among the treatments (P > 0.05). This study indicates that addition with Fe-Gly could improve growth performance and iron tissue storage and improves the antioxidant status of broiler chickens.

Recently, a new schizophrenia susceptibility locus 10q24.32-q24.33, containing two single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs: rs7914558 and rs11191580), was identified in a genome-wide association study. To examine if this locus is associated with schizophrenia in the Han Chinese population, we analyzed six SNPs, including two SNPs within the region of interest. The sample consisted of 1430 schizophrenia cases and 1570 controls from genetically independent members of the Han population. Single-SNP association, haplotype association and sex-specific association analyses were performed. Three SNPs, rs7914558 (p=1.41×10(-4); OR=1.11; 95% CI 1.05-1.17), rs12220375 (p=1.18×10(-4); OR=1.06; 95% CI 1.03-1.09) and rs11191580 (p=3.03×10(-4); OR=1.05; 95% CI 1.02-1.10), mapped to the locus and were significantly associated in our sample set. Further genotype and haplotype association analyses suggested a similar pattern. Similar to results from European populations, our results provide further evidence that this region associated with schizophrenia in Han Chinese. Results also confirm previous reports suggesting that 10q24.32-q24.33 offers an intriguing new insight into the pathogenesis of schizophrenia and may play an important role in its etiology.

We have previously shown that a recombinant human PTH fragment, Pro-Pro-[Arg11] hPTH (1-34)-Pro-Pro-Asp (hPTH'), could be a potentially better and more cost-effective therapeutic agent than PTH (1-34) on osteoporosis. In this report, we characterized the solution conformations of hPTH' by NMR spectroscopy and modeled the interactions between the hPTH' and the PTH receptor. By comparing it with PTH (1-34) structures and their respective interactions with the PTH receptor, we identified two segments of helix extending from Ile5 to Met8 and from Glu22 to Gln29 with a divided kink between the two helixes around Arg20. Mutated arginine makes hPTH' fill the receptor cavity better as well as forms hydrogen bonds with Val193. Understanding the ligand receptor interactions will help us design small molecules to better mimic the activities of PTH. Copyright © 2012 European Peptide Society and John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

AIM The radial artery has become the artery of choice after the internal thoracic artery for coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG). This study compares wound healing and arm complications after endoscopic versus open radial artery harvesting for CABG. METHODS From January 2002 to July 2004, 509 patients underwent CABG in which a radial artery conduit was used. Thirty-nine had endoscopic and 470 had conventional open radial artery harvesting. A propensity score was used to obtain 1:3 matching of all endoscopic to 117 open-harvesting patients. Postoperative wound healing using the Hollander scale, local neurologic deficits, wound infection, and pain scores were compared. RESULTS Wound healing: 34 of 39 endoscopic wounds exhibited a perfect Hollander score versus 339 of 470 open-harvest wounds (P=0.01). Wound appearance in particular was better than for open harvesting (P=0.004), with no abnormal step-off borders, irregular contours, or abnormal scar width observed. Neurologic deficits. Three incomplete neurologic deficits were observed after open harvesting (two being distal sensitivity localized in the interspace between the first and second metacarpals); one complete neurologic deficit occurred after endoscopic harvesting, but improved remarkably prior to hospital discharge. Wound infection. Occurrence of wound infection was similar in the two groups (P=0.7), although infection was more severe with open harvesting. Pain: pain score was lower (P=0.006) with endoscopic harvesting. CONCLUSION Compared with conventional open harvesting, endoscopic radial artery harvesting was associated with better wound appearance and less pain. Occurrence of neurologic deficits and wound infection was infrequent in both groups.

ABSTRACT: This study measured the area of the hippocampal structure using brain magnetic resonance imaging. We rebuilt a three-dimensional reconstruction of the brain and selected specific sections on the coronal plane, the cross section, and the sagittal plane and then measured the areas of the hippocampus using a software on the computer. In different sections, the left and right hippocampal areas were significantly different (P < 0.05), but the hippocampal areas of males and females are not concordant. There is no significant difference in the area in those aged 20 to 60 years. The hippocampal area is not correlated with the brain area in the same section. In conclusion, the standardization of the hippocampus is not suitable to judge the difference between males and females. The hippocampal area of healthy adults provides the criteria for atrophy of the hippocampus and a brief approach instead of the volumetric measures to apply in clinical diagnosis.

Although therapeutic cellular angiogenesis is effective for chronic ischemia, the optimal mode of cellular administration is still under exploration. This study aimed to develop a cellular delivery system to enhance the perfusion and angiogenesis in the ischemic hind limb. Collagen scaffold (CS) was prepared, and for morphology and toxicity analysis, bone marrow-derived mesenchymal stem cells (BMSCs) were isolated, expanded, filtrated, and seeded onto CS to construct BMSCs-CS. The ischemic hind limbs of rabbit models were implanted with autologous BMSCs-CS, CS, and autologous BMSCs; the untreated ischemic or normal animals were considered as the ischemic or normal control groups. Oxygen saturation parameters were regularly measured to determine the perfusion in the extremities. Histological examinations with hematoxylin and eosin immunostaining against von Willebrand factor and smooth muscle (SM) α-actin were performed for capillary and mature vessel evaluation. CS was a multiporous structure without cytotoxicity. At several intervals, the oxygen saturation ratio (OSR) in normal control was the highest. The OSRs in BMSCs-CS and CS were higher than that in BMSCs and ischemic control (p < 0.05); the OSR in BMSCs-CS group was higher than that in CS at 6 and 8 weeks (p < 0.05). The capillaries in BMSCs-CS and CS were higher than that in CS, BMSCs, and the ischemic or normal control (p < 0.05). The mature vessels in BMSCs-CS were higher than that in CS, BMSCs, and the ischemic or normal control (p < 0.05). The autologous cellular delivery system proved to be an effective approach for improving higher ischemic hind limb perfusion and angiogenesis as opposed to cellular therapy alone. © 2012 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Introduction: In the Janus kinase/signal transducer and activator of transcription (JAK/STAT) signaling pathway, STAT3 is one of the most prominent prognosis factors for cancer and leukemia. STAT3 activation might promote cellular transformation and therefore have an important role in human tumors. This study aimed to investigate the relationship between STAT3 polymorphisms and treatment response of acute myeloid leukemia (AML) in the Chinese population. Methods: Three single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) were tested in 130 patients with AML. Genomic DNA was isolated from peripheral blood and assayed by matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization time-of-flight mass spectrometry (MALDI-TOF MS). Results: The results of response to chemotherapy showed that there were strong relationships between unfavorable cytogenetics, partial remission (and even no remission), and GG genotype frequency in rs9909659 (P = 0.01 and 0.03). Patients younger than 45 years were associated significantly with GA/AA genotype (P = 0.01). Conclusions: The results of this study suggest that the GG genotype in rs9909659 might confer increased resistance to standard chemotherapy.

Two-dimensional atomic sheets such as graphene and boron nitride monolayers represent a new class of nanostructured materials for a variety of applications. However, the intrinsic electronic structure of graphene and h-BN atomic sheets limits their direct application in electronic devices. By first-principles density functional theory calculations we demonstrate that band gap of zigzag BN nanoribbons can be significantly tuned under uniaxial tensile strain. The unexpected sensitivity of band gap results from reduced orbital hybridization upon elastic strain. Furthermore, sizable dipole moment and piezoelectric effect are found in these ribbons owing to structural asymmetry and hydrogen passivation. This will offer new opportunities to optimize two-dimensional nanoribbons for applications such as electronic, piezoelectric, photovoltaic, and opto-electronic devices.

The aim of this study was to classify some markers of common herbs used in Western medicine according to the Biopharmaceutical Classification System (BCS). The BCS is a scientific approach to classify drug substances based upon their intestinal permeability and their solubility, at the highest single dose used, within the physiologically relevant pH ranges. Known marker components of twelve herbs were chosen from the USP Dietary Supplement Compendium Monographs. Different BCS parameters such as intestinal permeability (Peff) and solubility (Cs) were predicted using the ADMET Predictor, which is a software program to estimate biopharmaceutical relevant molecular descriptors. The dose number (D0) was calculated when information from the literature was available to identify an upper dose for individual markers. In these cases the herbs were classified according to the traditional BCS parameters using Peff and D0. When no upper dose could be determined then the amount of a marker, which is just soluble in 250 mL of water was calculated. This value, Mx, defines when a marker is changing from highly soluble to poorly soluble according to BCS criteria. This biopharmaceutical relevant value can be a useful tool for marker selection. The present study showed that a provisional BCS Classification of herbs is possible but some special considerations need to be included into the classification strategy. The BCS Classification can be used to choose appropriate quality control tests for products containing these markers. A provisional BCS Classification of twelve common herbs and their 35 marker compounds is presented.
