This paper introduces wireless technologies for use with robotic endoscopes in the gastrointestinal tract. The technologies include wireless power transmission (WPT), wireless remote control (WRC), and wireless image transmission (WIT). WPT, based on the electromagnetic coupling principle, powers active locomotion actuators and other peripherals in large air gaps. WRC, based on real-time bidirectional communication, has a multikernel frame in vivo to realize real-time multitasking. WIT provides a continuous dynamic image with a revolution of 320 × 240 pixel at 30 fps for in vitro diagnosis. To test these wireless technologies, three robotic endoscope prototypes were fabricated and equipped with the customized modules. The experimental results show that the wireless technologies have value for clinical applications.

PURPOSE: The DNA protein kinase catalytic subunit (DNA-PKcs) is one of the critical elements involved in the DNA damage repair process. Inhibition of DNA-PKcs results in hypersensitivity to ionizing radiation (IR); therefore, this approach has been explored to develop molecular targeted radiosensitizers. Here, we aimed to develop small inhibitory peptides that could specifically target DNA-PKcs autophosphorylation, a critical step for the enzymatic activation of the kinase in response to IR. METHODS AND MATERIALS: We generated several small fusion peptides consisting of 2 functional domains, 1 an internalization domain and the other a DNA-PKcs autophosphorylation inhibitory domain. We characterized the internalization, toxicity, and radiosensitization activities of the fusion peptides. Furthermore, we studied the mechanisms of the inhibitory peptides on DNA-PKcs autophosphorylation and DNA repair. RESULTS: We found that among several peptides, the biotin-labeled peptide 3 (BTW3) peptide, which targets DNA-PKcs threonine 2647 autophosphorylation, can abrogate IR-induced DNA-PKcs activation and cause prolonged γ-H2AX focus formation. We demonstrated that BTW3 exposure led to hypersensitivity to IR in DNA-PKcs-proficient cells but not in DNA-PKcs-deficient cells. CONCLUSIONS: The small inhibitory peptide BTW3 can specifically target DNA-PKcs autophosphorylation and enhance radiosensitivity; therefore, it can be further developed as a novel class of radiosensitizer.

We here introduce octahedral silicon serving as a structural center for the design of hydrolytically stable bioactive complexes as demonstrated with the generation of silicon-based high affinity DNA binders. This proof-of-principle study suggests that octahedral silicon complexes are falsely neglected, promising structural templates for widespread applications in chemical biology and medicinal chemistry.

The χ_{b}(nP) quarkonium states are produced in proton-proton collisions at the Large Hadron Collider at sqrt[s]=7  TeV and recorded by the ATLAS detector. Using a data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 4.4  fb^{-1}, these states are reconstructed through their radiative decays to Υ(1S,2S) with Υ→μ^{+}μ^{-}. In addition to the mass peaks corresponding to the decay modes χ_{b}(1P,2P)→Υ(1S)γ, a new structure centered at a mass of 10.530±0.005(stat)±0.009(syst)  GeV is also observed, in both the Υ(1S)γ and Υ(2S)γ decay modes. This structure is interpreted as the χ_{b}(3P) system.

We present a measurement of the W boson mass using data corresponding to 4.3  fb^{-1} of integrated luminosity collected with the D0 detector during Run II at the Fermilab Tevatron pp[over ¯] collider. With a sample of 1 677 394 W→eν candidate events, we measure M_{W}=80.367±0.026  GeV. This result is combined with an earlier D0 result determined using an independent Run II data sample, corresponding to 1  fb^{-1} of integrated luminosity, to yield M_{W}=80.375±0.023  GeV.

We have measured the W-boson mass M_{W} using data corresponding to 2.2  fb^{-1} of integrated luminosity collected in pp[over ¯] collisions at sqrt[s]=1.96  TeV with the CDF II detector at the Fermilab Tevatron collider. Samples consisting of 470 126 W→eν candidates and 624 708 W→μν candidates yield the measurement M_{W}=80 387±12_{stat.}±15_{syst.}=80 387±19  MeV/c^{2}. This is the most precise measurement of the W-boson mass to date and significantly exceeds the precision of all previous measurements combined.

The angular distributions of muons from Υ(1S,2S,3S)→μ^{+}μ^{-} decays are measured using data from pp[over ¯] collisions at sqrt[s]=1.96  TeV corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 6.7  fb^{-1} and collected with the CDF II detector at the Fermilab Tevatron. This analysis is the first to report the full angular distributions as functions of transverse momentum p_{T} for Υ mesons in both the Collins-Soper and s-channel helicity frames. This is also the first measurement of the spin alignment of Υ(3S) mesons. Within the kinematic range of Υ rapidity |y|<0.6 and p_{T} up to 40  GeV/c, the angular distributions are found to be nearly isotropic.

Objective: To compare safety and efficacy between the radial and femoral approach for percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) in patients aged 80 years and older. Method: Two hundred sixty-eight elderly patients (80-97 years old, 176 men) who underwent elective PCI between May 2003 and May 2007 were included in this study: the femoral (hereinafter referred to as the Femoral Approach Group) approach was used on 156 patients and radial (Radial Approach Group) on 112 patients. Clinical and procedural characteristics and the incidence of in-hospital major adverse cardiac events (MACE, including cardiac death, nonfatal myocardial infarction, and target lesion revascularization) were compared between the 2 groups. Results: Procedural success rate was similar and >95% for both approaches. The radial approach was associated with longer cannulation (3.0 ± 2.8 minutes vs. 2.0 ± 1.9 minutes, P < 0.001), fluoroscopy time (23 ± 15 minutes vs. 19 ± 12 minutes, P = 0.03) and higher rate of crossover to an alternative access site (9.8% vs. 3.8%, P = 0.02) compared with the femoral approach, while ambulation time (5 ± 2 hours vs. 20 ± 4 hours, P < 0.001), and rates of access site bleeding (2.7% vs. 9.6%, P = 0.004), hematoma (4.5% vs. 10.9%, P = 0.006), or any vascular complication (7.1% vs. 23.7%, P < 0.001) were significantly reduced with the radial approach as opposed to femoral. Multivariate regression identifies the radial approach (OR = 0.25, CI = 0.09-0.75) as an independent negative predictor of postprocedural vascular complications. Conclusion: When compared to the femoral approach, PCI with the radial approach significantly reduces rates of vascular complications in high-risk populations of patients aged 80 years and older. However, efficacy and procedural success rates were similar for both groups whereas cannulation and fluoroscopy time longer and puncture failure rate higher with the radial approach than femoral.(J Interven Cardiol 2012;**:1-5).

Fluorescence diffuse optical tomography (FDOT) is an emerging biomedical imaging technique which can be used to localize and quantify deeply situated fluorescent molecules within tissues. However, the potential of this technique is currently limited by its poor spatial resolution. In this work, we demonstrate that the current resolution limit of FDOT can be breached by exploiting the nonlinear power dependent optical emission property of upconverting nanoparticles doped with rare-earth elements. The rare-earth-doped core-shell nanoparticles, NaYF(4):Yb(3+)/Tm(3+)@NaYF(4) of hexagonal phase, are synthesized through a stoichiometric method and optical characterization shows that the upconverting emission of the nanoparticles in tissues depends quadratically on the power of excitation. In addition, quantum-yield measurements of the emission from the synthesized nanoparticles are performed over a large range of excitation intensities, both for core and core-shell particles. The measurements show that the quantum yield of the 800-nm emission band of core--shell upconverting nanoparticles is 3.5% under an excitation intensity of 78 W/cm(2). The FDOT reconstruction experiments are carried out in a controlled environment using liquid tissue phantoms. The experiments show that the spatial resolution of the FDOT reconstruction images can be significantly improved by the use of the synthesized upconverting nanoparticles and break the current spatial resolution limits of FDOT images obtained from using conventional linear fluorophores as contrast agents. It is also demonstrated that in contrast to previously employed approaches, which mainly aim to utilize and optimize the available data, our approach attacks the resolution limiting factor directly by tailoring the shape of the sensitivity profiles. This approach enables FDOT for the potential use in deep-tissue optical imaging of targets in biomedical systems with unprecedented resolutions.

Aims:  The aims of this study were to create and evaluate the Gateway-compatible plasmids for investigating the function of genes in Vibrio alginolyticus and other Gram negative bacteria. Methods and Results:  In this study, Gateway-compatible plasmids were successfully constructed for rapid and comprehensive function analysis of genes. Taking advantage of these plasmids, the in-frame deletion mutant strains and their complemented strains of five T6SS genes, including dotU1, VEPGS_0008, VEPGS_0011, hcp2, and ppkA2, were obtained. The results illustrated that all the mutant strains showed no significant effects on extracellular protease production, expression of Hcp1, and biofilm formation when compared to the wild-type strain, but in-frame deletion of VEPGS_0008 resulted in obvious biofilm reduction and the complemented strain restored to the level of the wild-type strain. Besides, in-frame deletion of dotU1, VEPGS_0008, and ppkA2 abolished the swarming ability. Conclusions:  A set of Gateway-compatible vectors for internal insertion, in-frame deletion and complementation of the target genes are constructed to facilitate the general and rapid function analysis of genes involved in T6SS in Vibrio alginolyticus. Significance and Impact:  The modified Gateway-compatible plasmids greatly facilitate the high-throughput and convenient function analysis of the unidentified genes. © No claim to Chinese Government works.
