To explore the optical neural stimulation with visible light, 620-nm red light pulse emitted by LED was used to stimulate the left primary visual cortex of adult rat. The neural response in right primary visual cortex was recorded with a flexible microelectrode. By synchronized averaging the raw signal, optical evoked potentials (OEPs) were observed a negative wave and positive wave after optical stimuli. Furthermore, the amplitude and occurrence of the negative and positive wave were modulated by the strength and pulse width of the optical stimulus. The preliminary experiment suggested that, beyond the infrared laser, the pulse of visible light (e.g. red light) can modulate the neural activity in central nervous system.

The plague occurred in Bianjing in 1232 was a serious event in the history of Chinese epidemic. It lasted for over 50 days, with a death toll of over 900,000. It is speculated that this is a mass epidemic of pneumonic plague and the pathogen was carried by the Mongolian Army when attacking Bianjing. At that time, the plague spread in Mongolian Army camp and finally involved the suburbs of Bianjing. After the army withdrawal, when Bianjing residents and soldiers went out of the city to collect foods and were unfortunately infected, and thus this dangerous infectious disease was transmitted into the city from the suburbs. Soon, the plague broke out and became epidemic in Bianjing during the 27-day period of 5 May-1 June, because of the cold snap rushed upon Bianjing on 1 June, the unusual weather was the motive for the mass epidemic of the plague. By then, it was popularly recognized as "exogenous cold damage". At present, facing the global climatologic changes, it is of great practical significance to explore the rich materials of plague and the climatic records accumulated in Chinese medicine.

The biodegradability and biocompatibility of a chitosan film were investigated in mice. The results showed that chitosan films had a mild inflammatory reaction in the early days of grafting, and after 16 weeks the inflammation basically subsided. Chitosan films were easily biodegraded. Chitosan is a novel natural absorbable medical film material and has a good developmental prospect.

By immunocytochemical method and radioimmunoassay, the gastrin secreting cells (G cells) and gastrin concentration in antral mucosa, gastric juice and serum in 20 patients with duodenal ulcer (DU) were studied. The number of G cells and gastrin concentration in antral mucosa showed no significant difference as compared with normal control. The number of G cells in patients with DU and antral atrophy was much higher than those with antral atrophy but with DU. It indicated that G cells were increased in number in DU, and the gastrin concentration in gastric juice (271.11 +/- 255.25 pg/ml) was much higher than in sera (74.71 +/- 43.07 pg/ml). G cells were distributed in different parts of pyloric glands, showing that gastrin in gastric juice should come directly from G cells. The disturbance of feedback mechanism in regulating gastric acidity might be an important role in hypersecretion of gastric acid in DU. The increase of gastrin concentration in gastric juice might be closely related to hyperplasia of parietal cells.
