We report a pediatric case of critical illness polyneuropathy and myopathy caused by Bacillus cereus sepsis during acute lymphoblastic leukemia therapy. A 15-year-old boy developed B. cereus sepsis and multiple organ failure on the 19th day after initiation of chemotherapy, and multidisciplinary treatment was started. Treatment was effective and septic shock with multiple organ failure remitted. He was weaned from a respirator on day 23 after the onset of sepsis, but complete flaccid paralysis of the 4 extremities occurred. His compound muscle action potential and F-wave occurrence were reduced on a nerve conduction test. The number of motor units was markedly decreased, and the amplitude and duration of individual motor units were low and short, respectively, on electromyography. Cerebrospinal fluid was normal. On the basis of these findings, he was diagnosed with critical illness polyneuropathy/myopathy. He underwent intensive rehabilitation and recovered the ability to walk 3 months after onset. He was discharged 1 year after the initiation of chemotherapy, and remission has been maintained without inconvenience to daily living activities for 3 years since disease onset.

Flow coefficients v_{n} for n=2, 3, 4, characterizing the anisotropic collective flow in Au+Au collisions at sqrt[s_{NN}]=200 GeV, are measured relative to event planes Ψ_{n}, determined at large rapidity. We report v_{n} as a function of transverse momentum and collision centrality, and study the correlations among the event planes of different order n. The v_{n} are well described by hydrodynamic models which employ a Glauber Monte Carlo initial state geometry with fluctuations, providing additional constraining power on the interplay between initial conditions and the effects of viscosity as the system evolves. This new constraint can serve to improve the precision of the extracted shear viscosity to entropy density ratio η/s.

We present a search for differences in the oscillations of antineutrinos and neutrinos in the Super-Kamiokande-I,-II, and -III atmospheric neutrino sample. Under a two-flavor disappearance model with separate mixing parameters between neutrinos and antineutrinos, we find no evidence for a difference in oscillation parameters. Best-fit antineutrino mixing is found to be at (Δm[over ¯]^{2},sin^{2}2θ[over ¯])=(2.0×10^{-3} eV^{2},1.0) and is consistent with the overall Super-K measurement.

BACKGROUND: Genetic examination of childhood leukemia has not been available in Iraq. We here report the frequency of TEL-AML1, E2A-PBX1, MLL-AF4, and BCR-ABL chimeric transcripts in 264 Iraqi children newly diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL), using FTA cards impregnated with bone marrow aspirate or whole blood. PATIENTS AND METHODS: The diagnosis of ALL was made according to standard French-American-British morphologic criteria. Based on the results of storage temperature and duration, most of the FTA samples were preserved at 4°C for up to 6 weeks in five Iraqi hospitals and then transferred to Japan for molecular analysis. Nested reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction was adopted for the analysis. RESULTS: TEL-AML1 chimeric transcript product was found in 32 (12.1%) of 264 ALL patients. Eleven (4.2%) patients, 4 (1.5%) patients, and 11 (4.2%) patients had E2A-PBX1 mRNA, MLL-AF4 mRNA, and BCR-ABL mRNA, respectively. One patient had both TEL-AML1 and E2A-PBX1 fusion genes. The incidence of TEL-AML1 in Iraqi ALL children appears to be similar to or slightly higher than those of Jordan (12%) and Kuwait (7%). The prevalence and clinical findings of ALL patients with either E2A-PBX1 or BCR-ABL were comparable to the data reported elsewhere. CONCLUSION: International collaboration via FTA cards may be helpful to improve diagnosis and management of patients with hematological malignancies in low-income and underdeveloped countries. Polycomb group (PcG) proteins are involved in chromatin modifications for maintaining gene repression that play important roles in the regulation of gene expression, tumorigenesis, chromosome X-inactivation, and genomic imprinting in Drosophila melanogaster, mammals, and even plants. To characterize the orthologs of PcG genes in the silkworm, Bombyx mori, 13 candidates were identified from the updated silkworm genome sequence by using the fruit fly PcG genes as queries. Comparison of the silkworm PcG proteins with those from other insect species revealed that the insect PcG proteins shared high sequence similarity. High-level expressions of all the silkworm PcG genes were maintained through day 2 to day 7 of embryogenesis, and tissue microarray data on day 3 of the fifth instar larvae showed that their expression levels were relatively low in somatic tissues, except for Enhancer of zeste (E(Z)). In addition, knockdown of each PRC2 component, such as E(Z), Extra sex combs (ESC), and Suppressor of zeste 12 (SU(Z)12), considerably decreased the global levels of H3K27me3 but not of H3K27me2. Taken together, these results suggest that insect PcG proteins are highly conserved during evolution and might play similar roles in embryogenesis.

BACKGROUND: Quantitative evaluation of minimal residual disease (MRD) following hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT) is indispensable for patients with hematological malignancies. In addition to established MRD markers such as immunoglobulin and T-cell receptor gene rearrangements, fusion genes, or aberrantly expressed genes, single nucleotide mutations are considered one of the MRD markers that reflect the malignant cell clone. METHODS: We compared the quantity of mutant genes by allele-specific quantitative polymerase chain reaction (AS-qPCR) for single nucleotide mutations (TP53 410T>A and PTPN11 1508G>A) with the percentage of autologous DNA by short tandem repeat (STR)-PCR. RESULTS: Following HSCT, the quantity of mutant genes detected by AS-qPCR correlated with the percentage of autologous DNA assessed by the STR-PCR. Moreover, mutant DNAs were detected at a quantifiable level before relapse, whereas the percentage of autologous DNA was less than 5%, that is, complete chimerism. CONCLUSIONS: The AS-qPCR approach for single nucleotide mutations was accurate and highly sensitive for monitoring pre-transplantation as well as post-transplantation MRD. AS-qPCR for single nucleotide mutation is suitable for monitoring MRD in patients who lack previously established MRD markers.

Back-to-back hadron pair yields in d+Au and p+p collisions at √s(NN)=200 GeV were measured with the PHENIX detector at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider. Rapidity separated hadron pairs were detected with the trigger hadron at pseudorapidity |η|<0.35 and the associated hadron at forward rapidity (deuteron direction, 3.0<η<3.8). Pairs were also detected with both hadrons measured at forward rapidity; in this case, the yield of back-to-back hadron pairs in d+Au collisions with small impact parameters is observed to be suppressed by a factor of 10 relative to p+p collisions. The kinematics of these pairs is expected to probe partons in the Au nucleus with a low fraction x of the nucleon momenta, where the gluon densities rise sharply. The observed suppression as a function of nuclear thickness, p(T), and η points to cold nuclear matter effects arising at high parton densities.

We present measurements of J/ψ yields in d+Au collisions at sqrt[s(NN)]=200 GeV recorded by the PHENIX experiment and compare them with yields in p+p collisions at the same energy per nucleon-nucleon collision. The measurements cover a large kinematic range in J/ψ rapidity (-2.2<y<2.4) with high statistical precision and are compared with two theoretical models: one with nuclear shadowing combined with final state breakup and one with coherent gluon saturation effects. In order to remove model dependent systematic uncertainties we also compare the data to a simple geometric model. The forward rapidity data are inconsistent with nuclear modifications that are linear or exponential in the density weighted longitudinal thickness, such as those from the final state breakup of the bound state.

The T2K experiment observes indications of ν(μ) → ν(e) appearance in data accumulated with 1.43×10(20) protons on target. Six events pass all selection criteria at the far detector. In a three-flavor neutrino oscillation scenario with |Δm(23)(2)|= 2.4×10(-3) eV(2), sin(2)2θ(23)= 1 and sin(2)2θ(13)= 0, the expected number of such events is 1.5±0.3(syst). Under this hypothesis, the probability to observe six or more candidate events is 7×10(-3), equivalent to 2.5σ significance. At 90% C.L., the data are consistent with 0.03(0.04)< sin(2)2θ(13)< 0.28(0.34) for δ(CP)= 0 and a normal (inverted) hierarchy.
