Channa striata, locally known as "haruan", is economically important in fisheries and aquaculture industries in several Asian countries. DNA sequencing, based on a partial segment of the Cytochrome oxidase c subunit 1 (CO1) gene, was used to determine genetic variation in C. striata samples from four different populations on the west coast of Peninsular Malaysia. The highest nucleotide and haplotype diversities were observed in the Linggi population (π = 0.0067, h = 0.835), and the lowest in the Timah Tasoh population (π = 0.0008, h = 0.286). Apart from Kajang-Linggi, which was insignificant, F(ST) values were significant (p < 0.05) in all pairwise-population comparisons. Consequently, it is inferred that genetic structuring C. striata populations in this region was largely shaped by a common origin, with secondary influences from geographical factors and isolation.

Red blood cell (RBC) hydration is regulated in part by the Ca(2+)-activated K(+) efflux (Gardos) channel. Senicapoc selectively blocks potassium efflux through the Gardos channel, reducing RBC dehydration and haemolysis, and increasing haemoglobin levels in sickle cell disease (SCD). This randomized, placebo-controlled trial was designed to determine the safety and clinical efficacy of senicapoc in SCD patients. One hundred and forty-five patients were randomized to receive senicapoc and 144 patients to receive placebo for 52 weeks. Consistent with a previous study, patients in the senicapoc group had significantly increased haematocrit, haemoglobin, and decreased numbers of both dense erythrocytes and reticulocytes when compared to the placebo group. The unblinded Data Monitoring Committee terminated this study early due to a lack of efficacy when it determined that, despite improvements in anaemia and haemolysis, no significant improvement in the rate of sickle cell painful crises was observed in patients treated with senicapoc compared to those on placebo (0·38 vs. 0·31, respectively). Comparisons of the times to first, second and third crises between the senicapoc and placebo groups were not statistically significant. Nausea and urinary tract infections occurred more frequently in the senicapoc group than placebo. Serious adverse events were similar in the two groups.

Charged-lepton flavor-violating processes are unobservable in the standard model, but they are predicted to be enhanced in several extensions to the standard model, including supersymmetry and models with leptoquarks or compositeness. We present a search for such processes in a sample of 99x10(6)Upsilon(2S) decays and 117x10(6)Upsilon(3S) decays collected with the BABAR detector. We place upper limits on the branching fractions B(Upsilon(nS)-->e(+/-)tau(-/+)) and B(Upsilon(nS)-->mu(+/-)tau(-/+))(n=2,3) at the 10(-6) level and use these results to place lower limits of order 1 TeV on the mass scale of charged-lepton flavor-violating effective operators.

The production of e;{+}e;{-} pairs for m_{e;{+}e;{-}}<0.3 GeV/c;{2} and 1<p_{T}<5 GeV/c is measured in p+p and Au+Au collisions at sqrt[s_{NN}]=200 GeV. An enhanced yield above hadronic sources is observed. Treating the excess as photon internal conversions, the invariant yield of direct photons is deduced. In central Au+Au collisions, the excess of the direct photon yield over p+p is exponential in transverse momentum, with an inverse slope T=221+/-19;{stat}+/-19;{syst} MeV. Hydrodynamical models with initial temperatures ranging from T_{init} approximately 300-600 MeV at times of approximately 0.6-0.15 fm/c after the collision are in qualitative agreement with the data. Lattice QCD predicts a phase transition to quark gluon plasma at approximately 170 MeV.

Searches for lepton-flavor-violating decays of a tau lepton to a lighter mass lepton and a photon have been performed with the entire data set of (963+/-7)x10;{6} tau decays collected by the BABAR detector near the Upsilon(4S), Upsilon(3S) and Upsilon(2S) resonances. The searches yield no evidence of signals and we set upper limits on the branching fractions of B(tau;{+/-}-->e;{+/-}gamma)<3.3x10;{-8} and B(tau;{+/-}-->mu;{+/-}gamma)<4.4x10;{-8} at 90% confidence level.

We present a measurement of the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa matrix element |V_{cb}| and the form-factor slope rho;{2} in B[over ]-->Dl;{-}nu[over ]_{l} decays based on 460x10;{6} BB[over ] events recorded at the Upsilon(4S) resonance with the BABAR detector. B[over ]-->Dl;{-}nu[over ]_{l} decays are selected in events in which a hadronic decay of the second B meson is fully reconstructed. We measure B(B;{-}-->D;{0}l;{-}nu[over ]_{l})/B(B;{-}-->Xl;{-}nu[over ]_{l})=(0.255+/-0.009+/-0.009) and B(B[over ];{0}-->D;{+}l;{-}nu[over ]_{l})/B(B[over ];{0}-->Xl;{-}nu[over ]_{l})=(0.230+/-0.011+/-0.011), along with the differential decay distribution in B[over ]-->Dl;{-}nu[over ]_{l} decays. We then determine G(1)|V_{cb}|=(42.3+/-1.9+/-1.4)x10;{-3} and rho;{2}=1.20+/-0.09+/-0.04, where G(1) is the hadronic form factor at the point of zero recoil.

We search for invisible decays of the Upsilon(1S) meson using a sample of 91.4x10;{6} Upsilon(3S) mesons collected at the BABAR/PEP-II B factory. We select events containing the decay Upsilon(3S)-->pi;{+}pi;{-}Upsilon(1S) and search for evidence of an undetectable Upsilon(1S) decay recoiling against the dipion system. We set an upper limit on the branching fraction B(Upsilon(1S)-->invisible)<3.0x10;{-4} at the 90% confidence level.

A precise measurement of the cross section of the process e;{+}e;{-}-->pi;{+}pi;{-}(gamma) from threshold to an energy of 3 GeV is obtained with the initial state radiation (ISR) method using 232 fb;{-1} of data collected with the BABAR detector at e;{+}e;{-} center-of-mass energies near 10.6 GeV. The ISR luminosity is determined from a study of the leptonic process e;{+}e;{-}-->mu;{+}mu;{-}gamma(gamma). The leading-order hadronic contribution to the muon magnetic anomaly calculated using the pipi cross section measured from threshold to 1.8 GeV is (514.1+/-2.2(stat)+/-3.1(syst))x10;{-10}.

We present an analysis of the decays B;{0}-->K;{*0}(892)gamma and B;{+}-->K;{*+}(892)gamma using a sample of about 383x10;{6} BB[over ] events collected with the BABAR detector at the PEP-II asymmetric energy B factory. We measure the branching fractions B(B;{0}-->K;{*0}gamma)=(4.47+/-0.10+/-0.16)x10;{-5} and B(B;{+}-->K;{*+}gamma)=(4.22+/-0.14+/-0.16)x10;{-5}. We constrain the direct CP asymmetry to be -0.033<A(B-->K;{*}gamma)<0.028 and the isospin asymmetry to be 0.017<Delta_{0-}<0.116, where the limits are determined by the 90% confidence interval and include both the statistical and systematic uncertainties.

We present evidence of D0-D[over ];{0} mixing using a time-dependent amplitude analysis of the decay D;{0}-->K;{+}pi;{-}pi;{0} in a data sample of 384 fb;{-1} collected with the BABAR detector at the PEP-II e;{+}e;{-} collider at the Stanford Linear Accelerator Center. Assuming CP conservation, we measure the mixing parameters x_{Kpipi;{0}};{'}=[2.61_{-0.68};{+0.57}(stat)+/-0.39(syst)]%, y_{Kpipi;{0}};{'}=[-0.06_{-0.64};{+0.55}(stat)+/-0.34(syst)]%. This result is inconsistent with the no-mixing hypothesis with a significance of 3.2 standard deviations. We find no evidence of CP violation in mixing.
