The dynamics of an order parameter's amplitude and phase determines the collective behaviour of novel states emerging in complex materials. Time- and momentum-resolved pump-probe spectroscopy, by virtue of measuring material properties at atomic and electronic time scales out of equilibrium, can decouple entangled degrees of freedom by visualizing their corresponding dynamics in the time domain. Here we combine time-resolved femotosecond optical and resonant X-ray diffraction measurements on charge ordered La(1.75)Sr(0.25)NiO(4) to reveal unforeseen photoinduced phase fluctuations of the charge order parameter. Such fluctuations preserve long-range order without creating topological defects, distinct from thermal phase fluctuations near the critical temperature in equilibrium. Importantly, relaxation of the phase fluctuations is found to be an order of magnitude slower than that of the order parameter's amplitude fluctuations, and thus limits charge order recovery. This new aspect of phase fluctuations provides a more holistic view of the phase's importance in ordering phenomena of quantum matter.

The χ_{b}(nP) quarkonium states are produced in proton-proton collisions at the Large Hadron Collider at sqrt[s]=7  TeV and recorded by the ATLAS detector. Using a data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 4.4  fb^{-1}, these states are reconstructed through their radiative decays to Υ(1S,2S) with Υ→μ^{+}μ^{-}. In addition to the mass peaks corresponding to the decay modes χ_{b}(1P,2P)→Υ(1S)γ, a new structure centered at a mass of 10.530±0.005(stat)±0.009(syst)  GeV is also observed, in both the Υ(1S)γ and Υ(2S)γ decay modes. This structure is interpreted as the χ_{b}(3P) system.

The aim of this study was to determine the prevalence of human papillomavirus (HPV) infections in women with different gynaecological diseases (GDs) and ages in southwest China. With the assay of reverse dot blot, a total of 5544 cervical samples, including 1008 normal and 4536 abnormal specimens from women with GDs, were assayed for HPV detection. For the normal group, 20.2%(204/1008) tested positive for HPV, of which 40.2%(82/204) were high-risk (HR-HPV) genotypes. In the 4536 abnormal samples, 1569 women (34.6%) tested positive for HPV: 73.5%(1153/1569) had a single infection, 17.7%(277/1569) dual infection and 8.8%(138/1569) multiple HPV infection. Of 1569 HPV-positive specimens, 58.7%(921/1569) were infected with only HR-HPV genotypes. Significant differences in HPV infections were found among women of different ages (P < 0.01), number of pregnancies (P < 0.01), GDs (P < 0.01) and age at first sex (P < 0.01). In the present study, we found a high prevalence of HPV infection in women with GDs in southwest China. In addition to HPV types 16 and 18, a significant proportion of other HR-HPV genotypes were detected in this population.

An end-to-end differential measurement approach with capacitively coupled contactless conductivity detection (C(4)D) was applied to anion-exchange monolithic capillary column ion chromatography. The column was prepared by thermally initiated radical polymerization of poly(glycidyl methacrylate) in a fused-silica capillary of 320 μm i.d. and modified by quaternary ammonium latex surface coating. Two C(4)Ds were placed near both ends of the capillary column and the output difference between them was measured. With 15 mM potassium hydrogen phthalate used as the eluent, good separation of a mixture of inorganic anions (F(-), Cl(-), NO(2)(-), NO(3)(-)) was achieved. The detection limits of conventional C(4)D are 1.6, 0.28, 0.53, and 0.47 mg L(-1) for F(-), Cl(-), NO(2)(-), and NO(3)(-), respectively. To further enhance the sensitivity, the capacitive impedance from C(4)D was neutralized by an inductive impedance from a piezoelectric resonator. An increase in sensitivity by a factor of 7-8 was achieved in the resonating C(4)D in comparison with the conventional C(4)D. The detection limits of the resonating C(4)D are 0.23, 0.041, 0.065, and 0.059 mg L(-1) for F(-), Cl(-), NO(2)(-), and NO(3)(-), respectively. The response of the resonating C(4)D was analyzed based on an equivalent circuit model.

The aim of this study is to investigate whether galanin (GAL) central receptors are involved in regulation of insulin resistance. To test it, a GAL antagonist, M35 was intracerebroventricularly administrated in trained type 2 diabetic rats. The euglycemic-hyperinsulinemic clamp test was conducted for an index of glucose infusion rates.The epididymal fat pads were processed for determination of glucose uptake and Glucose Transporter 4 (GLUT4) amounts. The Gal mRNA expression levels in hypothalamus were quantitatively assessed too. We found an inhibitory effect of M35 on glucose uptake into adipocytes, Gal mRNA expression levels in hypothalamus, glucose infusion rates in the clamp test and GLUT4 concentration in plasma membranes and total cell membranes of adipocytes. The ratios of GLUT4 contents of the former to the latter in M35 groups were lower. These results suggest a facilitating role for GAL on GLUT4 translocation and insulin sensitivity via its central receptors in rats.

Sufentanil, with a potent analgesia effect, has been wildly used in anesthesia and analgesia, especially for the cardiovascular surgeries. The aim of the study was to evaluate whether sufentanil provides cardioprotection and the effect of connexin 43 on the cardiac infarct size reduction. Sufentanil post-conditioning (bolus injection at 0.1, 0.3, 1, 3, 10μg/kg) or ischemic post-conditioning (3cycles of a 10s reperfusion alternating with a 10s ischemia) was induced in an intact rat heart model of ischemia-reperfusion injury. Both ischemic and sufentanil post-conditioning reduced the myocardial infarct size compared with control group. The infarct size limitation of sufentanil was dose-dependent, 1μg/kg has the optimal effect and increasing dosage could not afford further cardioprotection. Connexin 43 underwent dephosphorylation in response to ischemia-reperfusion measured by Western blot at the anterior myocardium tissues of left ventricle while sufentanil preserved the phosphorylation of connexin 43. The results demonstrated that sufentanil limits myocardial infarct size which is similar with ischemic post-conditioning at the dosage of 1μg/kg. Preservation of phosphorylation of connexin 43 plays an important role in the cardioprotection of ischemic and sufentanil post-conditioning.

Conversion of intestinal stem cells into tumor-initiating cells is an early step in Apc(Min)-induced polyposis. Wild-type p53-induced phosphatase 1 (Wip1)-dependent activation of a DNA damage response and p53 has a permanent role in suppression of stem cell conversion, and deletion of Wip1 lowers the tumor burden in Apc(Min) mice. Here we show that cyclin-dependent kinase inhibitor 2a, checkpoint kinase 2, and growth arrest and DNA damage gene 45a (Gadd45a) exert critical functions in the tumor-resistant phenotype of Wip1-deficient mice. We further identified Gadd45a as a haploinsufficient gene in the regulation of Wip1-dependent tumor resistance in mice. Gadd45a appears to function through its ability to activate the Jnk-dependent signaling pathway that in turn is a necessary mediator of the proapoptotic functions of p53 that respond to activation of the β-catenin signaling pathway. We propose that silencing of Gadd45a is sufficient to override p53 activation in the presence of active β-catenin under conditions of an enhanced DNA damage response.Cell Death and Differentiation advance online publication, 4 May 2012; doi:10.1038/cdd.2012.57.

In this paper, we present a methodology for analyzing passive infrared motion sensor data logged in the homes of seniors. The objective is to capture activity patterns that represent different health conditions. Recognizing changes in the activity patterns can then be used to provide early detection of health changes. A visualization of motion sensor data is introduced in the form of a density map that uses different colors to show varying levels of activity. For evaluating the activity density level accurately, time away from home is determined first using a system of fuzzy rules. In addition, a dis-similarity between two density maps is computed using texture features for automatically determining changes in activity patterns, which may indicate a health problem. The activity density maps are being used in an aging in place senior housing community to aid clinicians in early illness detection. Three case studies of elderly residents are included to illustrate how the density map and dis-similarity measure can be used to track general activity level and daily patterns over time, showing changes in physical, cognitive, and mental health.
